05th March, WCS staff received a baby black shanked douc (Pygathrix nigripes, an endangered species found only in Cambodia and Vietnam) from a local villager after he was found cowering alone at the bottom of a rubber tree in a plantation in the buffer zone of Seima Protection Forest. This young male, about three weeks old, still requires constant care and attention. Collaboration between the WCS Wildlife Health and Health Policy team, the WCS Seima team, and the Forestry Administration ensured the provision of safe housing and appropriate care to the baby monkey until he was collected by the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center two days later, where he will be rehabilitated and, if possible, one day re-released into the wild.
Samples were taken from the animal will provide information on his health status, contributing to WCS Cambodia wildlife disease surveillance efforts.
