A Community Law Enforcement Team patrolling inside Seima Protection Forest (SPF) found a baby great hornbill (Buceros bicornis, Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List). The bird was alone at the base of a tree, its leg tied with a piece of string, near a place used by illegal loggers. Although it appeared healthy and strong, the very young bird had not fledged yet and would not be able to survive in the forest by itself. The team therefore brought it back to the SPF station for a health examination and to coordinate its transfer to a sanctuary able to offer long-term care. It has now been taken to Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center, which is supported by Wildlife Alliance (WA), for rehabilitation, where it is doing well. When it grows bigger, the chick will hopefully be taken to WA’s Wildlife Release Station in Koh Kong in the Southern Cardamom Mountains. There it can be paired with another bird already at the station, and, if possible, the pair will be released back into the wild.
