25th to 30th April 2016, The Ministry of Environment (MoE) in collaboration with the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and supported by the US Forestry Service (USFS), conducted a 6-day practical training course for Sixty-one MoE rangers on strengthening patrol techniques and law enforcement within Protected Areas, at Takeung headquarters station, Kulen Promtep Wildlife Sanctuary (KPWS). The sixty-one MoE rangers participating in the training are based in KPWS (35 staff), Prek Toal (6 staff), Boeung Per Wildlife Sanctuary (10 staff) and Prasat Preah Vihear Heritage Park (10 staff). The training schedule was designed to complement and strengthen the participant’s knowledge and understanding of Protected Area Law (2010) legal procedures and adapt new patrol team strategies to deal with increasing illegal threats. The training focused on covering a range of subjects that are considered priorities for Cambodian wildlife protection staff such as; importance of conservation, codes of conduct, roles and responsibilities of patrol staff, Protected Area Laws and their implementation, key species identification, physical exercise, navigation using maps, compass and GPS, use of SMART patrol forms, patrol planning and preparation, patrol strategy and techniques.
